Spring Family & Student Survey Results

Over 3,000 parents/guardians and 3,200 students shared their feedback in our spring survey. Here are some themes and highlights.

Connection to School Community

Families of students who are learning in remote and hybrid report high levels of connection with their school. 

  • Over 80% feel comfortable with and know how to reach out to their child’s teacher with questions or concerns. 
  • 65% agree that their child’s teacher has provided opportunities for their child to socialize with peers.
  • 63% of remote learning families and 69% of hybrid families agree their child has had opportunities to socialize.

More students reported positive school connections, compared with last fall. 

  • Over 72% of secondary students who participated in the survey agree there is at least one adult they can talk to about how they are doing.
  • 69% agree that their teacher regularly checks in with them to see how they are doing. 

The improved results may be related to schools' focus on students' social-emotional well-being and one-on-one connections.

Staff received training on meeting the social-emotional needs of students, specifically addressing the different impacts of this unusual school year and the transition back to school.  Highline Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) team created lesson plans for instructional staff to use with students. 

The daily elementary schedule has an established social-emotional block for community building and teaching SEL skills and strategies. SEL is integrated throughout the school day.

Basic Needs

While 79% of families are satisfied with food and additional meals provided through the school district and feel supported by their child’s school, 57% are satisfied with childcare and 52% are satisfied with mental and emotional support. 

Staff are identifying additional mental health supports for students returning in the fall. For summer school, after-school childcare will be provided. 

Technology

This spring, 97% of families agreed they have internet access and their child has a technology device.

Pandemic Precautions

The majority of families are satisfied with school safety measures.

  • 90% agree they know the health and safety guidelines have been implemented in schools.
  • 87% have trust in their child’s school leader to make the right decisions to keep their child safe.
  • 25% are worried about their child getting sick while at school.

Positive Feedback

Families reported that schools and the district are doing well in several areas:

  • Communication from school and district 
  • Checking in on my children 
  • Availability of staff
  • Technology 
  • Teacher support

Areas for improvement include:

  • Socialization
  • Staying on track with assignments 
  • Changing schedule and teachers
  • Amount of screen time
  • Not enough physical activity
  • Student focus while learning online
  • Fear that students are not learning and will fall behind 

Issues with socialization, screen time, and physical activity will improve as students return to school in person in the fall. We are working on structures to continue close connections between staff and students next year and beyond to help students stay on track and stay engaged in learning.
